Speaker

I came with certain expectations of "The Green Manifesto" that David Gessner did not live up to. I thought his book was going to be technical and informative... like a manifesto. It did not resonate with me. I had a lot on my mind and didn't pay too close attention. Not to mention it was 8 o'clock at night on a Monday - that's not the most conducive environment. That mean's that there are only two types of audience members, those that chose to be there and those that are required to be there.

That said, I most likely won't read his book. I like fiction novels or Biographical A-Day-In-The-Life books about Veterinarians or Animal Medicine.

  1. Sydney, I recommend looking up the word "manifesto." Manifesto's are never informative, but always statements of a person's position on a particular issue. In this case, Gessner's take on what it means to be an environmentalist and how to approach environmentalism in an effective way.

Sorry you felt resentful for being REQUIRED to be there. It's unfortunate that the fact that these readings are assignments have so colored your experience of them. Do you feel that way about all the homework you are assigned generally? Is learning always a problem for you if it's assigned? Maybe contemplate the reason why I'm assigning these readings. That might be more productive that simply resenting the fact that they are required? I dunno. Just trying to help make your experience in my class a tad less torturous.

    Thanks.

  2. I didn't feel resentful necessarily, I was overwhelmed with work and grad school applications and summer applications and trying to find housing for next semester. SO much so, that spending the time to drive back to campus, find parking, and stay for 2 hours to listen to a speaker just didn't fit into the important tasks of the day. I apologize if what I wrote came off too strong but that was how I felt at the time. It had no bearing on any other activity of the class.

I was also frustrated about the first poetry workshop and THAT most definitely came across.
